I like them all, they would fit well in any tiki themed bar.

Uku,those pieces are really , really nice. nice. Mahalo for posting the additional info and pix. I’m anxious to hear what others here have to say. If I had the bucks I would be proud to have em in lounge. Go for it!
vood luck.

Otagiri Kabuki Mug and 2 Royal Hawaiian swiZers

Saw these two mugs at Value Village yesterday

From Tikis Grill & Bar, Waikiki. Not crazy about this style of Tiki.

From Cuba. I like this one and almost bought it. Not sure it's depicting a Tiki though. What do you think? PNG? African?

Hey Sweet Daddy, I’m with you-I don’t think it’s tiki but I would display it proudly in my tiki bar. Looks sorta “Conquistador” with swim goggles to me.
Does anyone know anything about this mugs origins?
Mahalo

So, Tiki enough! Throw it on the shelf, until you run out room, that is...

I would have bought it. I dig it.
Tiki or not?...well, it one of those mugs that if a company with "tiki" in its name and only made 25 in a special glaze, people here would be climbing over each other to get it.
Ooga mooga is filled with Sasquatch, aliens, space ships, monkey's. fez, octopus, and other weird things that have no connection to tiki no matter how much you stretch to justify it.... and its "tiki people" buying them.

If you didn't dig it, best to pass on it like you did.

What buzz said
What ET said

I would have got it just because it said Cuba
:)

Cuban souvenirs are not uncommon in thrift stores here. What I want to know is does this represent the style of a particular culture?

I don't think so. The Cuban souvenir industry is very generic. Like much local industry since Castro, it has come to a halt, and is lowly re-awakening. I think they import woodcarvings from various places, maybe African Cuba-friendly countries, and stamp the location on it…

But hey, it's a piece of primitive art, and a souvenir from a cool, rum-imbibing tropical island: A fine item for a Tiki bar!

No location marked on this one
But ooga says it's from the Luau Hut

Merry Christmas Jon,
I have one just like the one in your pic. Got mine from the bartender at the now defunct “Kealoas” in Chino, California. It was on display behind the bar when I mentioned that it was a cool looking mug.The owner is Kanaka and you know “Aloha” I was given the mug so it’s a special one to me. Later
Btw, they didn’t know where it came from-had it long time.

David
Great story

Cheers

Another couple of Maori (what else?) pieces found at the antique store today. A small pair of Salt and Pepper shakers.

And a very cool little business card holder. I had seen this piece in the store a while ago and when i was in today its price had been reduced so i grabbed it. Visually the space in the middle looked too wide to fit a business card but when i got home i tried one in there and it fits perfectly. The heads are exactly the same carving and size as the S&P shakers above. The description on the bottom lists in order, the native to New Zealand woods used in the strip along the middle of the piece.

glass bottle with ship inside my first one.

a few more

To quote Ice Cube.... today was a good day

I just had the very best time looking at the last 5 pages. Thank you all for your posts of tiki delights, Wendy

Hey Erich, congrats on a great find. I saw one at a Salvation Army bout nine month’s ago. It had several large chips, a long crack and was missing the lid which at the time I was unaware of. “The Tiki’s” was one of my hangouts when I was a youngster (pre-disco).Much as I wanted it I passed on it at 5 bucks.
Good hunting!

So i bit the bullet and went back to the antique store today to buy this. It has been sitting in the store for at least a year now but i always thought it was a little too expensive for what it is. They seller would only take 10% off the cost even though it had been sitting there for so long and others, besides myself, had asked about her selling it for a more reasonable price. Regardless, after realising it had the same base as the piece i bought last week and posted earlier, i decided i would get it.

The books that came with it are, from L to R, a dictionary, 'Maori Place Names' and 'Illustrated Gospels In Maori'. They are dated 1957, 1962 and 1965 respectively. After doing a little research on Google i found this link.

If you click on the brochures link towards the bottom of the page you can find it, (No. 70A) on this link.

I was curious how old it was going by the date of the books and on another link i now know it was released in 1964-72. The Salt & Pepper shakers are listed also although i can't find the business card holder but going by the label on the bottom i'm pretty confident it is from around the same time.

Made in Wanganui!!!! Sovereign Woodworkers was a firm based in the Wanganui suburb of Gonville from 1949 to 1992. They made various products featuring tikis for the tourist trade.

Here is a link to a profile of the company and its products: http://ketenewplymouth.peoplesnetworknz.info/sovereign_woodware

The old Sovereign Woodworkers factory (shown in the first B&W photo on that Webpage) is now the home of one of the local charity stores and I have made various tiki finds in that very building over the years.

Toto, j'ai l'impression que nous ne sommes plus au Kansas !

The perils of selective browsing. :S

That firm also made a tiki clock, which a friend of mine found in the charity store that is in their old factory building.

I'd like to see a pic of that.

I have three of their pieces now (which i bought within a week of each other), but now i'm on a mission to add the drink coaster set to my collection.

Here's the calendar:

Buzzy Out!

Buzz- date is off :)

S

Nice Buzzy. I saw that in the catalouge also. Wanna sell it? :D

New stuff:

Tiki Farm Mai Kai decanter

Tfarm vase

Dynasty volcano bowl

Islands Phoenix mug

pair of glass red robin mai tai glasses

Maori metal pendant(flaking slightly)

Coco joe shell eye guy

Everything was fairly cheap. $24 paid for all of it, found over the last 3 weeks

Yeah, and I never followed through on fixing that pic orientation problem...
Buzzy Out!

S

So that averages out at $3 each. That little maori bookstand cost me $35(AUS). You suck Buzzy.

U

Finally found a Mauna Loa Coconut mug...actually a pair. There is a label on the bottom. It is unreadable but could? be HF Pottery.

Congrats on the killer find. The label is indeed for HF. It stands for House of Favors

U

Trav, Thanks for the confirmation on the HF label.

Buzz- just take pics sideways, not up and down :)

Some finds from this week. I felt lucky, I collect nautical stuff.

This rope buoy float is huge, never seen one this big.

I found two of these tiki bowls.

Very nice Hilda. Any markings on the bottom of dem bowls?
Mahalo for sharing.

H

No markings. :(

Just returned from Waikiki
Score :)

Great detail in this lighter
Never seen one before

And the inspiration for Geckos mug
Unknown maker

Almost forgot

Really nice finds Jon. At first glance I thought that the lighter used the same design as the double tiki lamp from Trader Vic’s. I compared the two and there are a lot of similarities but also many differences.Congrats

picked up a wisteria frankoma t-7 this weekend - here are my local tulsa collection (most of the bottom 2 rows) frankoma bamboo, and chairman mao mug in the center from the new tiki bar in tulsa (The Saturn Room)

your display looks good! Careful; with that bottle of Trader Vic’s Kona Coffee. It was “discontinued a few years back. Good stuff imo.
Cheers

Stevekh- nice collection
U must have brought me luck today
:)
