conga-don't take this the wrong way but that tiki kinda looks like the aliens from "mars attacks".

Lookie what I found today!
One of them crazy United Airlines 3-D relief maps with the simulated carved wood frame.
It measures about 36x24 and is a good couple of 2-4 inches deep.
The detail on the frame is waay cool.

Aloha,
:tiki:

YOU LUCKY BASTARD. Very nice. Congratulations.

Hi Tikiwahine! Dan here from Taboo Tiki. How's the Island life? That mug is from the Hawaiian Village that closed down in about 1992. It was located in New Westminster, BC. It was a really cool place to go. The down stairs had different booths that were done up like small huts and they had a nice bar down there. The decorations were really tropical with all the usual bamboo, sea-grass, matting, etc.

They served there drinks in Orchid of Hawaii mugs and then after a while they had a local ceramic artist make moulds of them and put Hawaiian Village on them. As far as I know, there are only two mugs that were designed specifically for them. One is the wahine that you have the other is a bamboo styled mug that has a bunch of palmtrees on it and HV underneath it.

It is now a Japenese Sushi place. When the owners bought it, all they did was cover the name Hawaiian Village on the neon and fluorescent sign outside. It has a big palmtree on it and is really cool. All you have to do is take down there small white sign and the Hawaiian Village will shine again!! Well, that's my plan anyway!

I am adding a really cool shot of this place from an old matchbook for you. Hope this helps! Dan

Can't wait to see that in person next weekend when I come down!

Hi TabooDan, thanks for the info! Cool little matchbook, it's really neat to see it.

I lived in Vancouver for a year, but that was back in 97 when I didn't know much about tiki.

I think that's a GREAT plan! It reminds me of my plan to steal(purchase/beg for) the old Trader Vic's building(it's up in Sidney) and restore it to it's former glory in Victoria!(HA!)

thanks for the thread Kono...I agree that
it's pretty funky...in fact I passed on it
when I first saw it cuz it looked too
cheezy. But then...you know...sometimes
they just eat away at you until you
own 'em. I like the head-dress but the
mouth is just too much. glad that a few
other people own them too.

To Tiki Royale -
I love the map...where did you find it...was it a steal??

Hey Diva,
Thanks. The map was a thrift find and I'd say that $9 was a steal.

Mrs. Juno found this today at Kohls. It was with their bathroom stuff.

Today was a pretty good day for tiki hunting.

In the back: The Musical Moods of the Maori. Just in front of it is a Treasure Craftesque appetizer server shaped as a boat by Sequoia Ware. Left to right: a large pink mug that looks just like the Skipper Kent's Princess Keolo-na-hihi mug except it's all pink, not painted and a bit larger. It's unmarked. Next is a mug discussed on p103 of Tiki Quest. This is the version with glasses. Says: "MADE EXCLUSIVELY FOR HONG KONG BAR CENTURY PLAZA HOTEL" on the bottom. Next is a Leilani with several stirs including 2 Hawaiian Village (red and orange), Mai Kai, 6 TV menehune of various sizes, a Ports of Call and a couple others.

A little better look at the LP. The cover photo has several nice maori carvings.

Back left is a Hawaiian souvenir plate. Back right is a cool Hawaiian cookbook that I think may have been posted here earlier. Left front is a moai mug marked Kahiki Columbus Ohio on the bottom. Middle mug has "Hawaii Kai" marking on the back. On the right is a Treasure Craft coconut tree s/p shakers.

Cool 60s lamp that kind of straddles tiki and Danish Modern.

Two pairs of s/p shakers in perfect condition. Left are marked Kon-Tiki Ports and the right are marked Kona Kai.

Pretty good haul.

Found this great Treasure Craft Pirate mug on Thursday, he's about 6.5" tall. Great addition to the collection!

Damn Kono, That's a great haul!!

I found these large ship's lanterns at the garage sale of an old Disney construction foreman. They came from the old Disneyland Shipyard Inn, in the Disney Hotel complex, when it was converted to Hook's Pointe in 1999.

They are fairly large. Their flat shape lets them hang against a wall, and the front is a hinged door that allows access to the bulb. They have white bulbs inside now, but I bet would look good with red or green bulbs too.

Does anybody know the story on this style of mask?
Where/when they're from, etc.

More good reasons to marry this girl:
Stephanie gave me this yesterday. She found it at a local antique store.

It's large and the details are much clearer than the one I have. Perhaps that means it's older? Maybe not. The side with the words is bigger and makes me think this is a different mold.

But here's the best part:

$1

I think this move is going to be good. She has a great nose for tiki!

hey freak bear,

i have this semi-similar mask and a smaller one about the same woodtone as your carvings.

BK identified mine as a menehune mask. that's all i can tell you.

mahalo, j$

Thanks JD! I saw a 4 footer for sale online quite a while back very similar to yours but with a frown. FYI they were asking $200. Already sold Though:(

These always seem to be either smiling or frowning. I assume they're meant to be a pair (one of each) like the iconic Comedy/Tragety theatre masks.

OK, not really Tiki, but trader vics, so : here is a mug I bought from an english woman, representing a fisherwoman. The back says 1979, made in Japan :

I wasn't exactly sure where to post this, but I knew I wanted to post it just the same.

I found this at my parents house the other day while there for dinner. It's a photo I took when I was about 16. I took a career preparation graphic arts course in high school which included photography. We went on a field trip one day to china town. I liked this sign, but since the photograph kind of sucked after I enlarged it, I just forgot about it. My Dad keeps EVERYTHING.

I took a walk through China Town yesterday(it's not hard...it's only a block long!) and was sad to see that this place and sign no longer exist. It probably wasn't tiki related at all, but I thought some might like to see it anyhow. I've always been a fan of crows and ravens, and heckle and jeckyll.

Hey Tikiwahine, that picture is really something to crow about. HaHa
Thanks for sharing

In the past few weeks I haven't done too badly.

All these mugs were gathered from various thrift stores. Why is it that I've only been finding the mugs with handles lately? I'm not complaining, mind you.

Also found one of these (chalkware?) wahine busts. The eyes kinda creep me out, but not a bad find for $4.

The mysteries of Tiki never cease to astound me! This sign: What-where-...WHY!!!?

That's a Mama Grubber mug- it was an ill fated seafood restaurant offshoot of Trader Vic's.

Just found this last weekend. Anyone seen these before?

It looks like a ceramic moai with drink garnish:

BUT...lo & behold, it's a salt & pepper set!

Pretty nifty, I thought. Just says Made in China and has plastic stoppers, so I expect that it is a recent/current product. Anyone else have these? Where is it from?

[ Edited by: martiki on 2004-12-07 16:36 ]

HT

It can be found in many home catalogs, crate and barrels, kitchens etc, and other fine kitchen stores. they're all over ebay too. And yes, new product. Aloha!

That s/p is part of a tiki set from Sakura. Here's most of the set (in the pic):

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0000B2JZ8/qid=1102464511/sr=1-29/ref=sr_1_29/103-8445897-8167806?v=glance&s=kitchen

There was also a moai mug just like your shaker that did not have a handle and came with a bunch of really really crappy silverware that would break with normal use. Like you're eating mashed potatoes and the handle of the fork would just snap!

HT

So I picked these up for $4.50 each. Not a steal, but old standards that I didn't have any of in my collection. I need more vintage mugs. I've acquired too many modern ones. Anyway, they're all average, Trader DIck's, Leilani, and AKU AKU, but there's one I've never heard. It's from the Maui Lu Resort. See attatched pictures. Any info, anyone?

Where I live in TX that's a HUGE steal and a HUGE find. That Maui Lu mug is super-nice. That's a Daga mug isn't it? Let me know if you decide to part with it.

HT

Yah, it's marked DAGA hawaii on the bottom.

K

Like you're eating mashed potatoes and the handle of the fork would just snap!

So you've had my mother's mashed potatoes then....?

One of the things I love about Tiki Central is when you see something and think "I know I have one of those somewhere". So I started digging and blammo, there it was. I also have his shorter green brother (by OMC according to Tiki Quest). Don't have any history, just thought I'd share.....

Ok, so I won this one on e-bay, but it has been one of my grails for some time now.
Love the shape of this guy!

J

Is this phenomenon regional or national? I haven't found a single damn thing at the local thrift stores in weeks - and I stop there every day! Does this have something to do with the holiday season or am I just temporarily lacking in good mana?

Tikiwahine - is that the lovely Hawaii Kai skull? I'm also quite fond of that one!

Johntiki, I haven't found anything in the wild since the Treasure Craft Pirate mug.

People must be hoarding over the holidays or something...you'd think they'd want to clear out the junk to make room for relatives. I wish good and plentiful finds upon you!

That mug is totally un-marked, apparently OMC made unmarked ones, maybe it's one of them?

K

Found this today at Goodwill

[ Edited by: Juno on 2004-12-15 18:14 ]

Hey Juno,

That glass to me is more beautiful than any ceramic tiki mug. When mugs prices started going ballistic, I began scouring e-bay for the cheaper glassware and dinner plates, even though they're harder to find. That's my favorite collecting niche right now - Hurricane glasses, rock glasses, highballs, etc. I've never seen that hurricane glass from the Tur MaiKai. It's really nice. Congrats.

TikiWahine, That's one cute little skull mug!
I just picked up a couple myself:
Kahiki 2 and unmarked tottie mug with McCoyesque drip glaze--

Can't wait to use this one! Strange choice in colors though.

...and some older stuff--

sweeeet finds freakbear, what's the story on the center wood tiki? how tall is that motha?

HT

Okay, here's my thrift store finds for ONE DAY! I LOVE PITTSBURGH. I don't understand why, but the only place I've ever found tiki stuff at thrift stores is here. And here's my take for the day, not including the kahiki mug, I spent $40, and $20 was on the two sets of tiki spoon and forks. I'll let the tiki spoon and fork go for $10 if anyone wants it. It's what I paid. They're 3ft high.

JD,
It's a modern hawaiian piece from TikiMaster. Milo wood, a little under 3 feet. Last Christmas's gift to my self

Not to put a downer on your terrific tiki haul, but i hate this mug, its a bland holeless copy of the nice crisp detailed white mugs and there is one of these mugs sitting in my fravorite thrift store and i know that until i purchase it, its anti-tiki vibes will stop any true tiki mug from washing up on the shelves.
i should buy it and smash it but i suspect the little white lady will haunt me if i do.

HaleTiki,
That's a great Kahiki Mug! The only Kahiki's I've found are the #1 and 2!
