Found several nice size fishing floats or 'jugs' as they appear to be, in several colors. Only brought one home but I'm going back for more soon! They have an opening in the top that made it super easy to convert to a swag float lamp---sweeeet! |

I am schizo in my collecting, but it all eventually works out, since the general public refers to that as "eclectic". I am new to collecting mugs. Just had my first tiki mug shopping experience....got 3 mugs, and then was side-tracked by some jadite (that I have been collecting for years). Please feel free to make comments about any of my lame purchases or decorum, I am still learning. :)

Slow out there but had some fun this weekend: Things weren't looking too promising so I bought this. It's part of a set of six Chile Coasters. Later in the day I came across this, a slightly different long Post Card from Bob Lee's Islander. I don't have a scanner but it's got amazing details in person. Well things were looking up and then I got the big fella on the right in this shot. I was told he is from the Aku Aku but I don't know. I put a standard size one there for comparison. He's OMC and larger than the others I have.
Now comes the strange part. I didn't think the mug could be from the Aku Aku because I could swear the dealer said he worked at the Hilton and I don't remember there being a Hilton near the Cambridge Aku Aku. Well, today I found something interesting a couple of matchbooks & a TV ashtray. Note the Cambridge Address on the Aku Aku ones. Flipped it over & look what was there!!! Hmmmmm.... Tikisgrl |

L-R Generic tiki mug, looks like Jard Products, probably just a souvenir mug 2 Quon-Quon cups Orchids R-86 bowl PMP mug, unmarked. EXTREMELY worn...almost looks like he's been waiting outside for years. This is also smaller than similar PMP mugs and lighter weight. |

sputnikmoss, great finds there! Your toothpick holder, if I'm not mistaken, was sold with a hors douvres platter that the pineapple and menehune sat on. I haven't found both together (or just the platter), but I thought there was a pic of one here in an old thread. The pineapple was to hold hors douvres (spam, cheese, etc.) on toothpicks. Just figured I'd mention that if you or anyone didn't know. I have the exact same one (sans platter), but interesting enough, I picked up a little 3-4 inch statue of the same menehune (in a standing position) a few months ago. Now I wonder where he belongs.

Anyone have any idea what I have found? It's a glazed black ceramic two faced tiki on a pedestal with a fitted lid. No glazing or markings on the bottom. I figured maybe it was an ornamental or souvenir container from a hawaiian candy company or something but have found nothing like it on Google or EBay or Tiki Quest. Pictures to follow hopefully if I can remmeber how to post 'em. Thanks E ke kuene, ua milimili 'e 'ia neia mikana! [ Edited by: tomanikitiki 2007-01-13 20:43 ] |

Thanks for the info Unkle John, the quest begins! Oh I almost forgot about this one. My husband found this thrifting last year for $1.99. We just thought it was cute so we bought it. I did some research on the markings on the headstock and inside the body(TABU mark). Turns out it is made by the Aloha Manufacturing Co who made ukulele's in HAWAII from 1918-1935. Amazing!

Well, today went out thrifting for tunes at the half-price books...When I go to the original store in Alamo Heights, TX (A former San Antonio suburb that has been enveloped and swallowed by the city) I usually have luck...today was no exception! Exotica Vol. 2, Quiet Village, Paradise Moods, and then a HUGE number of "Hawaii Calls" albums. I picked up all the Hawaii calls ones, and the Denny albums :). Yay.

Some of my finds recently: A scorpion bown from the Lanai, San Mateo. Heavy crazing, and what looks like a sub-glaze crack(?). The bowl itself is sound. It looks as if this bowl was used as a vase. Bottom: Being a huge fan of the Bali Hai, San Diego, I was very happy to find a cocktail napkin from there. Also got three matchbook covers from the Leilani Hut, Long Beach. I also found an Aloha party and dinner dance invitation dated October 30, 1955. Inside: |

Thanks, man. But now I feel guilty. To be honest, I have not been searching actively since the Hukilau. So ya'll had your chance! I hadn't seen the blue Fisherman's Wharf mug before. Man, it's heavy! I couldn't resist the Hawaiian Village Tiki Bob, either. I am a sucker for Floridana of the tiki sort. It has a slight hairline crack, but I won't be drinking out of it anytime soon. |

Just returned from 2 weeks in LA and the Bay Area, my carryon bulging with tiki schwag. I would've filled up an entire suitcase if I could've afforded the ridiculous prices most dealers were asking. Fortunately, I found a couple of bargains at flea markets.
I also found this beautiful hand-painted mug from Norwegian Cruise Lines that features everyone's favorite finny Hawaiian fishy, the Humuhumunu: Here's a better look at the tiki carving. It's clearly female, and looks Rarotongan. Any clues as to its identity would be much appreciated.

Yes, after doing a little research, I agree. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find any information regarding which goddess the statue represents, although she might be Atanea, goddess of the dawn.

Got skunked last week, and yesterday, so this is actually today's stuff, but it's really two weeks worth of stuff, or after friday, three weeks worth of stuff. If I get skunked next week, then it's all I got this month. If I quit now, it's a lifetimes worth, and it's not that impressive. I don't know if this constitutes an actual "find" however,
Nevermind she kept asking the store clerks for the "Tiki Ceramic Building"! What is a Dad to do? You try to explain, send money and print pictures (left at home because she "knew" what I was talking about). Oh well, I did get one, right? The year has gotten off to a pretty good start. Who would have thought you could find 2 of these here in NZ? The condition is superb - I just washed some gunk out of the bottom of each which I'm pretty sure was the remains of the drinks that were served in them. |
