Nice Tapa Buzzy. More detailed then most.

Some more LP's from this week:

Earl Grant - Trade Winds,
The South Sea Serenaders - Tradewinds Romance,
And a loose disc copy of the Island Serenaders' Hawaiian Romance. Oddly enough, I found an orphaned sleeve for Crown Records' Holiday in Hawaii that should do a fair job protecting it!

This week's stuff:

Couple TVics Hawaii mugs and a couple Tiki Farm

Two Maori tikis

Buzzy Out!

Thanks David

Buzz- good haul

1 album
And this lil guy

S

found these at an antique mall for 10 bucks each - I think smaller one is witco, not sure on the taller one

OMC Coconut (no sticker)

And another Coconut
Unmarked, but the bottom is just like my Islander Stockton Coconut

Congrats on finding dat pair Jon.

I'd like to thank Don aka Tiki Shaker for giving me the heads up on this plate. He sent me a PM about a sale that had another one of the little bali hai plates that I have, except this one was black and gold vs white and gold. Of course I didn't get the PM until sunday, after the sale was in its 3rd day. I figured it was gone and I wasn't gonna drive 2+ hours to find out. My dad convinced me to call the sale. Normally estate sale people are jerks, but I guess luck was on my side, because not only were they nice, the plate was still there, and they offered to ship it to me.

So I now own 2 of these weird bali hai plates....
Thanks again Don

I saw that little guy on the left at an antique mall in Tulsa (presumably where you found it) when I was there last month but passed on him. I think the price tag said it was Witco but it didn't seem legit to me. Maybe I'm wrong. Same mall had another vendor with TONS of tiki stuff including a Steve Crane ku mug for some insane price like $250. I woulda bought a ton of stuff from him but it was all priced well over retail so I left empty handed.

ET- funny, 2 out there n u got em bof

that's where i found the small one - the guy in the back does have some decent stuff, but he's high - i was looking at some menus he had, but he was over $30/ea on them and they were pretty common ones

This week's stuff

A pair of Trader Vic's table lamps

las Vegas Cheeseburger mug

Pair of tikis I would usually pass on,

but they were attributed to a Seminar in Tonga, 1969.

Would have had more but the stupid price tags messed up a bunch!
When will they learn, NO Nasty Pricetags on the album covers....

sometimes if you are lucky goo-gone or dish soap will remove the tags without ruining the cover.
although i guess you'd get more weird remarks if you pulled out a bottle in the store.

It has been so very dead in Philly.

I am pretty sure is Maori with Abalone eyes. Marked "17 DG" on the bottom.

Insulated travel mug from Five-Below

I didn't buy these, but Marshall's has these two sets of tiki Glassware at $9.99 a set

Other things I saw but didn't buy or take pictures of:
3 Marwal Hula Girl busts, 2 small Maori statues, 2 slit Drums, and an overpriced Trader Vic's Skull mug ($40)

The statue is Maori. A bit rough but cool image of Tekoteko

A nice piece but it looks like a US version of a Maori carving via Hawaii to my eyes - that rough-carved "peanut style" finish is very American.

The earliest known tiki mug: "Ruru and Weku", designed by Harry Hargreaves of Crown Lynn, New Zealand, 1949.

Good one

And nice find
Baby's got back :)

Finally

Been working on obtaining my holy grail mug for a long time

The Tiki Gods made it happen
(And a lot of begging)

And two beat up Witcos
Still cleaning them up

Cheers all

Picked up a bunch of paperwork today. The people kept every piece of paper from there oahu/kauai trip. I love the airlines place mat.

I knew this castaways/ports o' call/ pieces of eight menu was sought after, (i wish it was in better shape) but after looking on ebay at what they are selling for I was shocked. It may have to be sold to fund something else I'd rather have. lol

This menu was interesting. Captains Table from twin Falls Idaho. I looked up the address (its a used car lot now). Seems like it would have been a Nautical place, but on Friday and Saturday it apparently had "hawaiian nights" with dinner and a floor show from the Hinano polynesian review. Somebody wrote 1978 on the menu.

It has been extremely dry on the tiki front here in Kzoo. This is my only find lately but a fun one.

Unca T, I like the graphics from back in the day. For that reason I snagged this some years back. Still has the mix in it although I had absolutely no intention of sampling it. I got fooled though-It ’s not vintage. The barcode on the reverse gave it away.
Cheers

Just found this guy in an antique store in Stillwater MN yesterday (I don't live in MN, was up visiting my sister and dropping in at Psycho Suzi's of course).

He is signed "Corky B. 1957" on the bottom. Apparently the seller knew that the B stands for Brondersen, which sounds like a good Swedish name from Minnesota, and fittingly this is the finest mid century modern Tiki I've ever seen. Anybody know who this Corky is? I love this design and it is really well executed (out of what appears to be a fine grained soft wood 4x4). Nice dark finish,

There was a popular woodworking or craft magazine that had a how to make a tiki on a table saw plans. Ill see if I still have the page, but thre a bunch like that out there.

edit: and now I think about it, it's in one of svens tomes...

U

Found this homemade naughty tiki mug this weekend. The bottom is marked DALLY 2001. Is anyone familiar with it?

Is that in "Tiki Modenr"? I haven't picked that up yet (missed out when it was new and las time I checked the prices for used copies were still a bit on the heigh side).

I wasn't sure, and was hoping that Sven would come by and answer that before I flipped through 513 pages of his first two books looking for it...

Yep.Page 223 in the Do-It-Yourself tiki chapter.

This weeks stuff:

Harvey's Hula bowl, OMC stickered and respectable glaze job.

Tahitian tiki pendant on a strand of those nut things

Little maori Tiki

Latest finds include this rotating tiki centerpiece from the lazy susan set. Now I need to find the four yellow and green dishes that go with it.

And this pair of chalk tiki heads measuring 11" tall.

The bottom shows the original price sticker from a tourist trap in the Ozarks. Probably from the 1960's.

I think these are the same as the ones pictured on page 187 of The Book of Tiki.

Couple cheapo flea market and junk store finds. I left 4 other Black Droopys behind, they were all unpriced and I didn't want to tempt the gods at the time. Better to walk out with one mug than none.

Anyone have this one?
I could not find it on O M.

Hey fellow tikiphiles! Haven't posted for awhile because I've been STUPID busy, though I've had tons of great tiki finds in the interim. Thought I'd poke my head in because I can't seem to identify todays finds.

First is this unmarked coconut.

Standard mat brown glaze, white gloss interior, and like I said, no markings. Has pretty good texture to it, which continues on the base. Thought at first it might be an OMC with the sticker washed off, but the OMC looks like it has a wider mouth, at least from the Ooga Mooga pics. Don't have one in my collection so I can't compare. Any thoughts?

2nd find was this skull mug.

It's obviously based on the Trader Vics pointy chin, which it is just as obviously not. Thought it might be a Tiki Farm, but the detail is much crisper, and the teeth holes are in the wrong place. Also, no markings.

While I'm at it, found this guy a little while back.

Menehune?

EDIT Okay, just after I posted this, I noticed the TINY script on his buttock, saying it is a Coco Joe, like I thought. I guess my new old man glasses work!

Any way, hope to see everyone at Tiki Kon next week. Cheers!

ukutiki we had one of those years ago. I got it from eBay. Someone said the guy made them for a party. We don't have ours any more but I remember it as being the same colors but a different face. I think each one is hand made.

===========================

We had one of the greatest finds ever. In 20 years of collecting we had never seen this cookie jar. We had the shakers but that was it.

Anyone else out there have one of these?

We also found this bowl that made a nice collection of three colors. Anyone have a fourth color?

Our last find was a tiki pole like those at the Crowne Plaza in San Diego. Four faces.

It's been a great month of hunting. Cheers, Wendy

I found one earlier this year, and having never seen it before either, I bought it. Then I sold it a couple weeks later at ITMP. A couple days after I sold it, I found another one. I didn't want it, but told Mattikiman about it and he came and grabbed it. I think he's keeping his matchbooks in it. Good size for that

Other than those, only yours.
Buzzy Out!

Wendy,
Deforest of California was a family owned ceramic company that was in business from the early 1950's till 1970 when they closed their doors. They made great cookie jars, chip and dip sets and ashtrays with that cool mid century drip glaze. (Contemporary of California Originals etc.) They were known for their cookie jars, but it was difficult to compete with much cheaper items coming from japan after the war. They closed early in 1970. They are vintage most likely from early 1960s, super cool find. I expect the little tiki lid tops got chipped or broken frequently.

Yesterday at the seasonal thrift store I uncovered - of all things - a coconut monkey from the Philippines! With the slot in the top shell it doubles as a bank for loose change.

Bay Park Buzzy you are such a great hunter. Could we come visit you the week before Oasis starts. We want to ogle your collection. PM your phone number and address please.

ModernArtifactsNY Dan was so happy to have all this information that he had me print it so he could put it into the cookie jar. If we had found those that Buzzy got we would have taken them all!

It's just so much fun to see something new out of the blue. Cheers, Wendy

This week's stuff:

Very happy with this 3' PNG mask for $15!

Frog and snake got little shell eyes. No damage at all.

The smallest of my Tahitian knife dagger thingy collection

4 matchbooks

Never had one of these before. Sticker on bottom says "PAC Japan"

8 mugs that remind me of late 2006 and 2007, because that's when I used to see all these new all over the place:

Tikinator is the hand painted glasses one. Cant remember if that's the "good" one, or the one you don't want?

PS you might want to pencil in a little bit of looking time over here. Under the tiki stuff, Dan's going to find some other stuff he likes:

Buzzy Out!

Buzzy- Dan-0 will be in heaven looking at your records...

Today's
OMC sticker Kon Tiki SnP / no markings on the bottom

Worst sound ever, slurp of an empty tiki mug through my straw!!!

[ Edited by: hang10tiki 2016-07-03 19:51 ]

Went to my local Total Wine (Brea, Calif. for some silver rum and to my surprise they had tiki mugs for sale. Only one style and color. I liked em and bought two @8 bucks. whenever I shop there the checkout clerk asks if I found everything that I was looking for. I always say no, where are the tiki mugs. This usually gets me a quizzical stare. Maybe there will be more in the future. Hint, hint Holden.
